Sounds of the underground: The official Omega 2015 music starter pack

By Robert Jamora

2014 instantly became the year of the "starter pack meme" and this article will serve you as a directory on not entirely 'trendy' music as to speak, but local and international musicians who put effort into performing regularly and releasing songs without the help of major record labels.

POP PUNK

Have you heard several radio hits which is very upbeat, with crunchy guitar tones, fast drum beats and a whole lot of 90's romcom style angst? This genre is the perfect example of "starter pack." There are kids being introduced into entrylevel band 5 Seconds of Summer as of late, as much as kids back in the day were introduced to Blink 182, Green Day, Simple Plan and Fall Out Boy. The future listeners of this genre will eventually look for more music from different genres in the following years. Modern pop punk would never had commercial success without the pop sensibilities injected with punkinfluenced grunge sound of Nirvana and several alternative artists during the 90's, the whole independent college rock radio stations in America and Europe, The Ramones, The Smiths, the Cure, the whole 90's indieemo wave, the Southern Californian punk scene and just contagious pop rock songs from the likes of Buddy Holly and The Knack. And PS, The Defend Pop Punk Group sucks.

Descendents/ALL

Imagine this. What if your honor student manghaharana during high school sang in a band about studying, drinking coffee and farts? sure you've heard of people being nerdy with the consistency of being brutally honest in the process (And for the record, Weezer may have mastered it, but the Descendents were the first real 'nerd' rock band). But have you heard it blended so disgustingly beautiful? That is how you can describe the pioneering pop punk band Descendents. Yes. PIONEERING. Subjectively speaking, this band is considered the Beatles of Pop Punk. The Descendents within their 30 year history and their revolving lineup with the exception of their drummer has paved their way into cult status due to the release of their breakthrough record Milo Goes to College.

The boys are composed of their main songwriter/drummer Bill Stevenson, bassist Karl Alvarez, guitarist Stephen Egerton and the iconic frontman Milo Aukerman. Filmage: the story of Descendents/ALL was released last year directed by Matt Riggle and Deedle LaCour it is the first documentary to feature the band's autobiography narrated by different rock icons. The band was reportedly working on the studio last year and fans should expect new material from them this 2015.

Blink 182

In the late 90's, there were three twentysomethings who came from the distant land of Southern California that were quipped with no clothing and penis jokes. Everyone took this supposedly joke band seriously.

They were the gateway band who shaped a generation of angsty teenagers. Guitarist/vocalist Tom Delonge hated how their image was marketed during their breakthrough. He once said in an interview held by UK magazine Rocksound, that their record label "made it look like we really were some kind of erotic boy band or some sh*t." They were the blueprint used by bands like All Time Low and every other suburban pop rock band that came after them. Blink 182 or the Mark, Tom and Travis show took the world by storm with their charttopping radio hit "All the Small Things."

Two albums later after their breakthrough album Enema of the State, the band would later call quits due to creative differences mainly because of Delonge. Shortly after the breakup, bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus and drummer Travis Barker went to form their next project +44 while Delonge formed Angels & Airwaves.

Several years later after Barker's survival on a tragic airplane accident, the trio would reform giving the fans a comeback album and an EP (Easy Play). But after 4 years of waiting for a followup to 2011's Neighborhoods, schedules have been continuously held back for the group to create new material. Also the fact that the members have been busy with their separate careers.

As of January 2015, the rest of the band has announced that Tom Delonge is indefinitely not a part of Blink 182 and will be temporarily replaced by Matt Skiba of

Alkaline Trio at the 8th annual MusInk Music and Tattoo festival in their March performance. There are no reports on what are the future plans of Barker, Hoppus and Delonge's state with the band is currently unclear.

Goo

Goo was one of the first bands in the Philippines that incorporated the elements of power pop melodies and abrasiveness of punk and hardcore into one. Coming from different sectors of Metro Manila namely Quezon City and Marikina, Goo is composed of brothers Jay (guitar and vocals) and Casey Santos (lead guitars), drummer Spyk Maniego also of the punk band Throw and former Tame the Tikbalang bassist Aries Victorino
Formed in 1995, members of the band took their sound from groups like Descendents/ALL, Face to Face, Alkaline Trio, Ignite and 7 Seconds to name a few. They also do 80's post punk cover songs from time to time. Their performances could be described as very simplistic at times but could easily give you postgig withdrawals.

The first time I saw them made me hum The Sound's Total Recall all night before going to bed. When asked on what would their plans be this 2015, Jay Santos said, "we just plan to play as much as we can, where we can, for anybody who would want to hear us play."

POST HARDCORE

With the emergence of 00's bands like Pierce the veil, falling in reverse, black veil brides and taking back sunday. People tend to put the stereotype of post hardcore as "scene music" and by scene music, it's commonly tagged as breakdown heavy with a "call and response" alternation between whiny high pitched vocals and midranged growls. It is also characterized with feminine and flashy fashion sense taken from the 80's glam to New Wave/Goth era which broke out during late 00's. If 1984 was a human being, he'll want his music back. Post Hardcore started out in the DC punk scene in the light of Ian Mackaye by releasing material in his independent label Dischord records. Dischord bands took an experimentalambient approach while keeping its dissonant route and were slowly moving away from the heavy and fast hardcore punk style that was commonly emerging back in the day. Also an inevitable characteristic on how to distinguish most of the 80's 90's post hardcore bands from other bands is their short longevity. Far from the style these new 'scene' bands practice today.

Fugazi

If you have been reading the article religiously you'll notice I've mentioned Ian Mackaye above just before his feature on his band Fugazi. What? He has a band too? Hell yeah he does. Guitarist/vocalist Ian Mackaye also unintentionally found the straight edge movement before with his band Minor Threat. He also first coined the term "Emocore" with his band Embrace and produced some of the essential punk records of this generation. He's like the Michael Jordan of punk rock and guitarist/vocalist Guy Picciotto is his Scottie Pippen. Picciotto is the Samwise Gamgee to Mackaye's Frodo Baggins and bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty could be a good Gimli and Legolas. And not understanding the references makes you a Boromir.
If you still don't get it try watching The Interview first.

Fugazi, a term coined by Mark Baker in his Vietnam War short story compilation entitled "Nam" stands for "F***ed Up, Got Ambushed and Zipped In (into a body bag)." The band was dubbed in an OpEd by Alternative Press as "The Best Punk Band in the

World." Their stand with regard to Political Issues and the Doityourself (DIY) ethic is essential in the whole existence of the band. To get an idea of what DIY is, Fugazi bravely turned down offers of magazine companies that has liquor and cigarette advertisements and several mainstream labels that would like to record with them during their existence. Due to high demand of their records, they also sold their material in a cheap price. Therefore, leading into higher profit in their part. Their album Repeater sold 300,000 copies in less than a year with minimal production from an indie label. They criticized concert etiquette and expressed their hate towards violence through 'hardcore dancing' or moshing. As a band, Fugazi toured extensively and has released 6 records until they went into an indefinite hiatus on 2002.

Touché Amoré

As part of the emerging late 00's "Emo Revival", (Now this is an eyesore. Emo was in fact
more alive in the underground these past few years.) Touché Amoré epitomizes the perfect blend of screamo (also known as 'skramz') with a dash of post rock/ambient elements and with a little addition of melodic hardcore tendencies.

The band is most known for their agressive performance, their consistent output while collaborating with different artists such as Thursday's Geoff Rickley. They released their debut album ...To the Beat of a Dead Horse in 2009 through Rickley's Collect Records and recorded with several bands for their split EPs. Founded in 2007, Touché Amoré started good with their witty remarks on different faces of society and subcultures in their 2008 demo released through No Sleep Records. After their release of their debut record, the band got signed under Deathwish Inc. An independent label founded by Converge vocalist Jacob Bannon. Their debut with Deathwish is entitled Parting The Sea Between Brightness and Me. It led to several EPs which were constantly released. Touché Amoré gained positive reception from Pitchfork and Alternative Press with their 2013 effort Is Survived By. The band is set to perform in Coachella this 2015.

NonEntities

The experimental punk supergroup had only formed around the last quarter of 2014 from the ashes of two influential pinoy hardcore bands Tame the Tikbalang and The Beauty of Doubt. "The gigs we played in 2014 were like breakin gigs for us." Says vocalist Ronald Schlander. "We weren't really planning to play until we release the first batch of songs, but, we really miss playing live so as soon as the songs were finalized, we started playing." The 5 members have their respective projects apart from Nonentities. Veteran Guitarist Boyet Miguel currently plays in Pioneering Hardcore Punk band Betrayed since their inception in the 80's.
He also used to play alongside guitarist Kyle Rivera in Tame the Tikbalang and briefly with The Beauty of Doubt alongside Schlander. Bassist Mark Morada is with scene veterans Empty and Drummer Bong Penetrante plays in Molomen. "We have been inspired by many different artists. We have many different musical and nonmusical influences." Says Schlander. "When it comes to the band, we just want to make music that we ourselves want to hear."
Judging from their first performance in the IDB (which was the goto place for local shows in Sucat) closing show last year, Nonentities puts out a visceral vibe. Coming from Schlander's deranged vocals, the minimal but precise guitar work from TTT guitarists Miguel and Rivera up to the solid rhythm section of Morada and Penetrante. The quintet channels their frustration very well. And to fans of punk rock or just music in general should watch out for them. These guys play music for the sake of the music itself.

Recommended Songs: "As to future plans, we will be releasing a series of 3song EPs. The first one will be out end of January. It will be available for free download. All our releases will be for free. No commercial or corporate tieups. Completely independent." Ronald Schlander

METAL

Is known most as being the most provocative music genre to date. Heavy metal had branched out a whole spectrum of different subgenres that incorporated from different playing styles. Various musicians also incorporate alternative, jazz, classical, punk, folk, electro, blues, psychedelic rock and etc. while maintaining the whole heavy metal aesthetic. Heavy Metal started up as psychedelic rock combined with blues but not until bands like Motorhead, Led Zeppelin Judas Priest and Black Sabbath came in the late 60's who changed the musical perspective of metal into a darker approach.

● Legend Status

Black Sabbath

Sam Dunn's 2005 documentary entitled, Metalhead: A Headbanger's Journey explained how the English quartet is undoubtedly the first heavy metal band while being compared alongside Led Zeppelin. They have given influence from metal mainstays like Slayer and Metallica to bands such as The Foo Fighters and the Smashing Pumpkins. It is because of several elements the band is known for.

Aside from the fact that Guitarist Tony Iommi is the main songwriter of the band, he invented the sinister sounding "devil's chord" which he incorporated in most of their songs, Ozzy Osbourne's haunting wail, breathtaking drum rolls from former skins man Bill Ward and Geezer Butler's distorted bass tone. With these elements intact added with horrific thematics adapted from movies, Black Sabbath has not only gained popularity but also controversy and fear from bigoted individuals from the media, the church and the academe during the 70's. Not only that, because of their regular touring and abusive lifestyle led Osbourne to leave the group a year after their 1978 release Never Say Die. After Ozzy came several members who were onandoff the band excluding leader Iommi. Even at some point, Sabbath had included Ronnie James Dio the father of the "devil horns."

After several years of recording since their formation in 1968, Black Sabbath planned to have a reunion in 2011 but came into a legal dilemma, which led Osbourne and Butler to be more open into having a reunion with Iommi in 2012. It was because of Ward who allegedly demanded a higher percentage of pay. Adding to that is Iommi who was

diagnosed with Lymphoma before the band released "13" in 2012. Black Sabbath is set to release their final album and tour this year before letting Iommi retire from playing.

Converge

So here it is. The bastards of heavy. Converge is a hardcore quartet from Salem, Massachusetts. Why is it tagged in metal you say? It is because of the reason that Converge has innovated not only the hardcore scene, but heavy music in general by their eclectic approach in playing their own style of "chaotic hardcore." There is literally a huge probability that this band has inspired a new generation of bands practicing the diy ethos in the underground scene. Since their inception, the band have not received critical acclaim until their 2001 album Jane Doe through independent label Equal Vision Records.

The band has received praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Revolver, Alternative Press, Decibel, Sputnikmusic and MetaCritic. The band is characterized by the use of complex bonecrushing beat patterns from their drummer Ben Koller, shifts from violent riffage and melodic tapping skills from guitarist Kurt Ballou, Nate Newton's Cohesive sound and the gruesome shrieks coming from Jacob Bannon. The band is currently working on Ballou's Godcity studios for their followup on the 2012 release All We Love We Leave Behind.

SkyChurch

During the 90's there came a trio consisting of brothers that were performing at huge arenas internationally and were constantly touring. The girls were screaming the names of each member of the band as they were performing and literally everyone in the pop world worshipped this band. I was referring to Hanson not this group, but to comparing

Hanson from these three brothers is blasphemy. When it comes to musicality and band chemistry.
Even though they started at the similar age, Skychurch who formed in 1990 outweighs the latter by pouring their hearts out in their performance even in the smallest of crowds. The original lineup of Skychurch consists of three Dela Cruz brothers coming from Manila namely guitarist Rommel, bassist Russell and drummer Robert. They were one of the cunning folk that shaped the metal scene of the philippines today. Several lineup changes were made because of Rommel’s decision to pursue his own profession as a doctor. Joey Dizon from Intolerant and Russell’s current bandmate at that time was filling in for their elder brother. The breakup of Intolerant led into Dizon’s exit from the group which made the brothers play together for a couple of shows in 2013. A few months later, the band continued without Rommel and recruited Jomal Linao of Kamikazee temporarily, but eventually ended up with Jhun Siscar.

FOLK REVIVAL/ACOUSTIC

There comes a point sometimes when you get tired of EDM, trance, Kpop, Jpop, Dubstep, Indie, Metal, Rock, Punk, Pop and etc. You'd realize that you need something more raw compared to these types of music. And what good is it to listen to the same old pop song structure with oldfashioned country instruments? Though the term folkrevival isn't just limited to pop itself. It is also applied into several fusion genres such as, folkmetal, electric folk, folk rock and others.

Chris Carrabba

Chris Carrabba has gone into several changes throughout the years. Playing with his first band the Vacant Andy's and sometimes even sessioning for veterans New Found Glory has shown him his Pop side, with Dashboard Confessional he's shown his efforts in putting sad boy singalongs.
His own spot as original singer in Further Seems Forever proved his execution of ferocious vocal melodies with songs like Monachetti, Justice Prevails and Rescue Trained were at par with the former frontmen who were once with that band.

But then, the Pompadour sporting frontman wasn't satisfied with this. Thus, he formed a new project entitled Twin Forks. Twin Forks was a big risk for Carrabba. He was at the prime of his career in Dashboard and he took a step back from all the melancholic angst of Dashboard by going back to his acoustic roots. Playing mainly with record producer Jonathan Clark playing bass, Ben Homola (Brand New, Bad Books and Manchester Orchestra) on drums and Suzie Zeldin of the Narrative on mandolin. Twin Forks is forms upbeat melodies with the assistance Carrabba's vocal style shifting from a songbird reminiscent of what he used in Dashboard and Further to a rougher style similar to Tom Waits and a solid band to back him up. Twin Forks has released its selftitled debut record last February 2014.

Dallas Green is a multiple awarded singersongwriter who started his career in being a guitarist for the band Alexisonfire. This project started off as an online sharing project wherein he gave free acoustic songs that are crafted far from Alexisonfire's harsh playing style back in 2004. It turned out to be viral and led him into his first show.

The title of Green's solo alias is a play on words which came from his name. 2011 was an integral year for the project's existence due to the decision of his previous band (Alexisonfire) to break up. Saving The Dying Hope

Here are several obvious elements which a metalcore band incorporates in their music: the use of double bass and occasional blast beats, breakdowns, screamed vocals and scene hair. I'm not stereotyping here, but Saving the dying hope may try to sound like blessthefall, we came as romans and the devil wears prada but they are more to that. "We've also added ambient elements in the guitars, pads and we tend to play with the dynamics." Says keyboard player and clean vocalist Melquiades Abrera. The band was formed after vocalist Niko Cezar and guitarist Jed Consolacion's former band We are Warped has disbanded. There was a show where We are Warped was set to perform, but instead of communicating with the former members, he recruited some of his friends to perform with him for one show this includes Kieth Altares on drums, Joms De Asis Pasayod on guitars, and Gio Fuellos on bass. "Instead [of using the former name], Jason a former guitarist of the band came up with the name Saving The Dying Hope." Says Abrera, "The savior is the newly formed band back then and the dying hope is their chance to play our music." The band plans to write their first full length this year.

False Contender

Modern Pop punk has gotten big with the help of international mainstays such as Four Year Strong, Set Your Goals and A Day to Remember. It is inevitable for filipinos to worship the orangehaired singer Hayley Williams. Heck, I bet somewhere in the the Philippines there's a random person playing a Paramore hit on their mp3 players right now. Enter 5piece newcomers False Contender. Formed in 2013, the four of them are affiliated with other bands based in the Metro, excluding their drummer Paul Cemetara. Vocalist Banjone Roque and Yong Pardilla were former members of Harbor the Tides and Saving the Dying Hope respectively. Guitarist Martin Arago and bassist Thomas De Jesus are currently members of WallBreacher.

It has been a fun 2014 for the band playing regularly at gigs around the metro, opening up for their close friends SDTH's EP launch and local event Intramuros Rising 2. When asked on what would be their plans this 2015, Pardilla a tourism major here in LPU said, the band plans to to play in different provinces this summer. "There are many bands local and international bands who've inspired us in making music but The Story So Far, Neck Deep and Real Friends struck us the most." Pardilla says regarding their musical influences.
